Sydney 2023 Learn to Paint Display - Beginner's
This class will be held on March 10 and 11, 2023 at Exiles Club, 9 Mitchell street, Marrickville NSW 2204.
2 Day Course - Learn How to Paint Display (Beginner - Intermediate)
The cost of the course is: $300/student (bank transfer only now)
The course fee covers 2 days of tuition, 75mm 3D printed resin figure for each student and travel costs for the instructor.
What to Expect:
The goal of the class is to get a tabletop painter comfortable with the basics of display painting by the end of the weekend. You don't need to have any advanced knowledge of painting to enter this class. Some knowledge would be helpful but if you are a complete novice painter, don't worry! We will start at the beginning!
We’ll start out with answering some questions around how to properly prepare your miniature including reviewing tools, how to use them and how to prime properly. Color Theory comes up next! I’ll introduce the foundations of color theory include color mixing, value, color schemes, color psychology and a bunch of other stuff! I’ll recommend books for reading at home to further your knowledge. This will include both presentation of ideas and practical exercises. Technique will follow the color theory section. I’ll explain how to apply paint using glazing and 2 brush blending. We’ll also cover visual versus physical texture and how this relates to contrast.
From here I’ll include a discussion around how to paint faces and what the differences are between male and female faces. This is usually accompanied by hair and simulating light reflection for a glossy looking mane! And lastly, we’ll spend time focusing on how to paint true metal metallics. Throughout, I will provide visual demonstration of technique execution along with explanation.
There will be plenty of time for one on one support through the class. I keep my class presentation casual as I want my students to feel comfortable asking questions and initiating conversation.
Supply List:
Paints - whatever you are comfortable with or a selection of artist acrylics.
Brushes - size 1, 2 and 3 high quality pointed round sable watercolor brushes. (see recommendations below)
Palettes - wet palette that is at least the size of A4 paper.
Light - LED is great!
Journal and Pen
Hair Dryer
Paper Towels
Water Cup
Super Glue
Scalpel
Emory Board
Aerosol Primer - The GW Black and Tamiya Fine Surface in White are my strong recommendations. If a few people could bring primer that don’t mind sharing in class, that would be excellent!
Supply Recommendations:
You can create your own Wet Palette by following the instructions here.
Brushes need to be Kolinsky Sable or Red Sable Hair Pointed Round Watercolor brushes. Brands I recommend from most expensive to least expensive are:
Winsor & Newton Series 7 (not the Miniature Series 7s) in sizes 1, 2 and 3
Raphael 8404 Series in Sizes 1, 2 and 3
Rosemary & Co Series 22 or series 33 in sizes 1, 2 and 3
310K Rehab Kolinsky Sable Pointed Rounds in sizes 1, 2 and 3 (found at Art Scene)
Lights need to be daylight or white light fluorescent or LED. Incandescent bulbs are too yellow and end up distorting color.
I will bring a selection of my heavy body artist acrylics to use in demonstration. Students are welcome to use them if they would like to try them out. Otherwise, if you would like to purchase your own, Irresistible Force does carry the Scale 75 Heavy Body Artist Acrylics (the toothpaste tubes, not the dropper bottles). I would suggest the following colors:
SART01 Art White
SART19 Intense Yellow
SART04 Primary Yellow
SART23 Magenta
SART25 Dark Violet
SART20 Yellow Ochre
SART06 Burnt Sienna
SART03 Primary Blue
SART26 Turquoise Blue
SART30 Prussian Blue
SART02 Art Black
Please let me know if you have any questions prior to the course. I can’t wait to see everyone there!

2 Day Color & Composition Course
The cost of the course is: $250/student (bank transfer only now)
The course fee covers 2 days of tuition, a bust/54mm resin figure as well as my travel costs.
In order to reserve a spot in this class, either email or PM me on Facebook Messenger. I no longer have a shop portal on this page and instead am only doing bank transfers to secure spots in classes. If you need a payment plan, please let me know and we can work something out.
***Please note that this will be a long and intense class. We will have a lunch break and a few short breaks but otherwise I want to focus on powering through as much information as possible over the weekend.
I will supply a copy of either a bust or 54mm model for every student. The aim will be to get the miniature as fully painted as possible over the course of the weekend.
The goal of the class is to get a tabletop painter comfortable with the basics of display painting. You don't need to have any advanced knowledge of painting to enter this class. Some knowledge would be helpful but if you are a complete novice painter, don't worry! We will start at the beginning. I will also bring the different tools I use to clean models and we will cover their uses. I will also discuss the different primers on the market and explain their different properties.
The weekend will start with a Powerpoint presentation first outlining vocabulary so we can standardize our language when we are discussing thoughts throughout the weekend. Then we will quickly cover what tools and materials I think should be in everyone’s supplies at home, why and how to use them. From there, I will cover proper cleaning and priming of models, which we will do together as a class.
Once models are primed, we will let the primer rest and touch on basic color theory where I will have students create a color wheel and go through mixing exercises.
Once all of that is achieved, we will start slinging paint on our model. I will demonstrate 2 Brush Blending and Glazing as the main painting techniques and we will cover specific areas such as hair, skin, metallics and how to paint over sculpted textures.
I recommend all of the students bring the following with them (See Notes Below):
Paints - whatever you are comfortable with or a selection of artist acrylics. You can also use what I bring to class.
Brushes - size 1, 2 and 3 Winsor and Newton Series 7 (not the miniatures) or comparable quality pointed round sable watercolor brushes.
Palettes - wet palette that is at least the size of A4 paper.

Canberra Learn to Paint Display (Beginner's)
This class will be held on August 10 and 11, 2019 at 13 Sleigh Place Hume ACT 2620. Huge thanks to Sam Pahl for letting us use his space!
2 Day Beginner’s Course
The cost of the course is: $250/student+$15 (venue fee) (bank transfer only now)
There is a venue fee associated with this course which is in addition to my course fee. This fee covers the rent and utilities for the space we are using for the class.
I will supply a copy of either a bust or 54mm model from FeR Miniatures for every student.
Light
Journal and Pen
Hair Dryer
Paper Towels
Water Cup
Super Glue
Scalpel
Emory Board
Aerosol Primer - The GW Black and Tamiya Fine Surface in White are my strong recommendations. If a few people could bring primer that don’t mind sharing in class, that would be excellent!
*Supply Notes*
Lights need to be daylight or white light fluorescent. Incandescent bulbs are too yellow and end up distorting color.

For supplies for the classes, I recommend you guys bring the following:
Winsor and Newton Series 7 Size 2 and 3. Please note, I am using the correct sizes. I do not mean to write a double zero (00) and a triple zero (000). I actually mean the big ass size 2 and 3. Just ask Charles Radford. He's seen the ginormous brushes I use.
Also make sure you are buying the Winsor & Newto series 7 standard sizes, not the miniature sizes.
If you cannot find the WN brushes, you can order the same sizes in series 22 from Rosemary and Company which is a British manufacturer that does direct sales. If you guys want to save on shipping, maybe place a group order.
Or you can also buy the same sizes in Raphael 8404 Kolinksy Sable.
Is anyone Vegetarian or Vegan and against the use of animal products in their brushes? I do have recommendations on synthetics, if needed.
For paints, you can bring whatever you are most comfortable with. I am most familiar with the P3 range as I've been using it for a bajillion years. It is also the best paint to 2 Brush Blend with, which we will go over in class.
I will be using some P3, a Vallejo or two and my artist tube acrylics that include Jo Sonja and Schminke. I only use the metallics from P3 and Vallejo for the most part, a gloss coat from Vallejo, Metallic medium from Vallejo and the Scale 75 Inktesnity for inks. Otherwise, I only use Jo Sonja and Schminke for my regular paints. However, I want you to bring paint you are comfortable using. I will explain the different properties of paints in the class and what the various popular game brands are designed for. You guys are also more than welcome to try any paints I bring with me.
Otherwise, make sure to bring:
Sketchbook and writing implement
Travel Lamp
Power Board/Power Strip
A *LARGE* Sistema Container so we can make wet palettes together
Unwaxed, non-silicone coated baking paper/baking parchment. I use the Aldi Brand or Multix.
Hair Dryer
Scalpel or X-Acto Knife with new blade
Super Glue
Super Glue Accelerant
Fine Grit Sandpaper or Emory Board/Nail File
And if someone could bring some primers for us that would be excellent. Either GW primers or Tamiya Fine Surface. I just can't fly with Aerosols.
If there are any questions, please let me know.
